The Primer playbook

Results day

Primer can use analysis you have done in the platform and notes you have already uploaded. Try these tasks around results to follow up on what matters to your coverage.

Guide 01

Get Primer Reports automatically for your Core Coverage

When a company is in your Core Coverage, Primer sends its Primer Reports to you automatically. Keep your coverage up to date so you receive the reports for the companies you follow.

Do this

  1. Open Companies in the left-hand panel, then choose Core Coverage.
  2. Check that the companies you follow are in the list. Add any that are missing.
  3. Read the reports as they arrive. Use them to pick out the findings you want to discuss with Primer or investigate further.

Guide 02

Automate your results-day accounting check

Run the Accounting Red Flags skill whenever new results arrive. The routine checks reporting quality and cash conversion, then highlights changes worth investigating.

Do this

  1. Open Routines → New routine and choose Event-driven, where it is available in your workspace. Name it Results-day accounting check.
  2. Choose Core Coverage as the group to watch. Under Run on, choose Filings for earnings and trading updates.
  3. In the instructions, ask Primer to use the Accounting Red Flags skill on the new document. Have it revisit any concerns in your existing analysis or uploaded notes.
  4. Choose your delivery settings and create the routine. Read its first run and follow the source references for the most important findings.
Set up an Event-driven routine for Core Coverage and choose Filings to trigger the accounting check.

Set up an Event-driven routine for Core Coverage and choose Filings to trigger the accounting check.

Try this

Paste this into the Event-driven routine’s instructions.

“Use the Accounting Red Flags skill to review the new company filing that triggered this routine. Compare the results with the same period last year and the most recent comparable period. Revisit concerns in my existing analysis and uploaded notes, and look for new issues in reporting quality, cash conversion, working capital, adjustments and accounting definitions. Explain what changed, why it matters and whether it could be a timing effect. Prioritise the findings and cite the financial statements or footnotes. Save the review as a dated Note.”

Guide 03

Find things people might have missed

Have Primer look beyond the headline numbers when a company reports. The aim is to find useful details in the release, tables and footnotes that deserve a closer look.

Do this

  1. Create an Event-driven routine called Things people might have missed, where Event-driven is available.
  2. Choose Core Coverage and select Filings under Run on.
  3. Ask it to compare the new filing with prior disclosures and your existing research. Look for changes in segments, cash flow, definitions, targets and the language management uses.
  4. Create the routine and read its first run. Ask it to explain why each detail matters and show the original source. It should say when it finds nothing significant.
For this routine, select Filings so a new earnings or trading update starts the task.

Try this

Use these instructions for an Event-driven routine watching Filings.

“Review the new company filing that triggered this routine for things people might have missed. Go beyond the headline results: examine segment trends, cash flow, working capital, footnotes, changed definitions, targets and management wording. Compare with prior disclosures and my existing research and notes. For each useful finding, explain what changed, why it could matter and where it appears in the source. Separate facts from possible interpretations and give follow-up questions. Do not claim a detail has been missed by the market without evidence. If nothing significant stands out, say so.”

Guide 04

Prepare questions for management

Turn the results into specific questions for the call or meeting. If you have already done the analysis in Primer or uploaded your notes, the agent already has that context: you do not need to explain your investment view from scratch.

Do this

  1. Start a new session and add the company with @. Ask Primer to use the latest results and your existing analysis or notes.
  2. Ask for questions about the changes that matter to your investment view, especially assumptions the results have not resolved.
  3. Have it rank the questions and explain the figure or statement behind each one. Ask for a direct question and a useful follow-up.
  4. Once the call transcript is available, ask which questions management answered and which still need to be raised.
Start a new session, add the company with @ and ask for management questions using your existing work.

Start a new session, add the company with @ and ask for management questions using your existing work.

Try this

“Prepare questions for management at @Company following its latest results. Use my existing analysis and uploaded notes to understand my investment view. Focus on the most important unresolved assumptions and changes in the results. Rank the questions, give the figure or statement behind each one with a source reference, and write a direct question plus a follow-up if the answer is vague. Where a call transcript is already available, separate answered questions from those still outstanding.”

Guide 05

Build a Peers coverage group

Ask Primer to find the relevant peers for every company in your Core Coverage. Put them in a separate group called Peers so their results can trigger research on the companies you follow.

Do this

  1. Start a new session. Ask Primer to build a peer list for all the companies in your Core Coverage.
  2. Ask for a table showing each coverage company, its peers and why each comparison is useful. Focus on relevant products, markets and customers.
  3. Review the list and make any changes. Ask Primer to add the peer companies to a coverage group called Peers, removing duplicates.
  4. Ask it to save the table as a Note called Coverage Peer Map. The read-across routine will use it to connect each peer to the right companies in your Core Coverage.
Ask Primer to build the peer list in a session, then add the companies to a group called Peers.

Ask Primer to build the peer list in a session, then add the companies to a group called Peers.

Try this

“Build a peer list for every company in my Core Coverage. Show a table with each coverage company, its relevant listed peers and why each peer is useful for comparing products, markets, customers or operating trends. Once we have reviewed the list, add the peer companies to a coverage group called Peers, avoiding duplicates, and save the table as a Note called Coverage Peer Map. Keep the link between each peer and the Core Coverage companies it can inform.”

Guide 06

Automate read-across when your peers report

When a company in your Peers group reports, have Primer investigate what its results could tell you about the relevant companies in your Core Coverage.

Do this

  1. Build the Peers coverage group and Coverage Peer Map Note using the guide above.
  2. Open Routines → New routine → Event-driven, where it is available. Name it Peer results read-across and choose Peers as the group to watch.
  3. Select Filings for earnings and trading updates. Add Calls too if you want a follow-up when the earnings call transcript arrives.
  4. Ask the routine to use Coverage Peer Map to identify the relevant Core Coverage companies, then investigate demand, pricing, margins and guidance where the peer provides useful evidence.
  5. Create the routine and review its first run. Check that each comparison explains the business connection and any important differences before drawing conclusions.
Use Filings for peer results. Add Calls if you also want to review the peer’s earnings call transcript.

Use Filings for peer results. Add Calls if you also want to review the peer’s earnings call transcript.

Try this

Use these instructions for an Event-driven routine watching the Peers group.

“When a company in my Peers group publishes a new filing or call transcript, use Coverage Peer Map to identify the relevant companies in my Core Coverage. Investigate what the peer’s results and commentary could tell us about those companies, focusing on demand, pricing, costs, margins and guidance where relevant. Explain the business connection and differences in products, geography, reporting periods and definitions. Compare the evidence with my existing analysis and notes. Cite the sources, explain what supports or challenges my view, and identify questions to investigate. If there is no useful read-across, say so. Save the findings as a dated Note.”
